Mozambique will receive investments in renewable energy
A partnership between the Mozambican Foundation for Community Development (FDC) and the German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ) will provide investments in renewable energy sources in the African country. According to the FDC official statement, companies will set up a fund in “response to the need to propose alternatives to poverty reduction by encouraging economic growth in Mozambique’s rural, urban and periurban areas.”
In the country, only 28% of people have access to the electricity grid, with only 5% in rural areas. Funding will be made available in three stages. The first, “access”, will be to promote modern renewable energy solutions to families outside the national grid.
The second, “productive use”, aims to disseminate the productive use of photovoltaic solutions and energy equipment to commercial and agricultural companies in rural areas.
The third, “humanitarian”, aims to expand photovoltaic solar solutions for vulnerable families located in the regions most affected by cyclone Idai, which hit Manica and Sofala provinces in May.
Today, firewood and charcoal are still the main sources of energy in the country for cooking, heating and lighting homes.
