French company Neoen signed a concession agreement with the Mozambican government on Tuesday in Maputo for the construction of a solar power plant, with an estimated cost of more than US$50 million, according to the Mozambican press.

The solar power plant will be installed at the Metoro administrative post in the district of Ancuabe, Cabo Delgado province, with an installed capacity of 41 megawatts of electricity, which will be sold in that region of Mozambique.

Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy Max Tonela said at the end of the contract signing ceremony that this project is part of the government’s programme to accelerate the country’s electrification, while also improving the quality and availability of electricity in the northern region of the country.

The contract was signed by Tonela, the representative of the public company Electricidade de Moçambique, Carlos Yum and of Neoen, Cyril Perrin, according to Mozambican newspaper Notícias.

According to the company website Neoen is the leading independent producer in France and one of the world’s largest renewable energy producers, aiming to exceed 5.0 gigawatts in operation and under construction by 2021.
