Gaza – Guaranteed universal access to energy
GAZA could achieve universal access to electricity by 2030, and currently has a coverage rate of 48.5 percent, thus placing it at the third national level in a list led by the country’s capital, followed by Maputo-province.
Despite these numbers, there are still many challenges ahead, one of which is to ensure that by 2030 the population of this part of the country has universal access to electricity. To this end, several démarches are underway to carry out the province’s electricity project, through the national grid, but also using renewable energy systems, especially photovoltaic.
The use of renewable energy systems is now one of the major goals of the Gaza Government, as some districts, particularly in the northern region, have high levels of population dispersal, Mozambique (EDM) is an obstacle.
In March, the province held the first electrification meeting. an event that brought together several key players in this process, including EDM, at the central, regional and provincial levels, district administrators, the National Energy Fund, city presidents and some members of the central government.
The meeting, according to the provincial director of Gaza’s Mineral Resources and Energy, Castro Elias, aimed at good planning, which is to ensure that all districts and municipalities in their action plans include the electrification component.
The occasion also served to jointly survey the areas which are most in need of electricity in the province, taking into account the projects, as this is essential for good planning.
According to Castro alas, the dissemination of the use of new and renewable energies, fundamentally the photovoltaic systems. was one of the elements that also received attention during the first electrification meeting.
To this end, three companies involved in the production of renewable energy systems presented their products, which, according to the governor, are presented as a solution to low-income families.
“One of the recommendations that emerged from the meeting is that each administrator should make the disclosure about the use of these systems with their communities,” said Castro Elias.
As a result of the dissemination of the use of renewable energies at district level, from March to this year about 300 families are already benefiting from these systems, which is already contributing to access to electricity.
Gaza last year had about ten thousand new electric power connections, which for the provincial government is a huge gain. This year, in a plan of twenty thousand connections, by September 14 thousand new connections had been made, which is consolidated by the quality of energy that is supplied to the population.
“With the Zimbene substation we already have energy in quantity and quality. However, its expansion is lacking, which requires an investment. We are still trying to fulfill what our plans are, “said Castro Elias. He added that this year alone the provincial government invested just over 50 million MT for electrification, mainly in the expansion of the electricity grid in the three new districts, namely Chongoene, Limpopo and Mapai.
According to our data, Gaza currently has a total of 148,413 power connections, of which 72,267 belong to the Xai-Xai service area, which includes the districts of Limpopo, Mandlakazi and Chibuto, of which 76,146 are customers of the Chókwè service area, which covers the Bilene district and the entire northern part of the province.
