EDM needs 126M Euro to strengthen structures
EDM spokesman Luís Amado said today that $120 million will be used for more resilient infrastructure in the provinces affected by cyclone Idai in the central region and $21 million will be used to reinforce equipment in the northern provinces hit by Cyclone Kenneth.
“This money will ensure a more lasting reconstruction of the infrastructure destroyed by cyclones,” added Amado.
The EDM spokesman explained that the company has been able to restore almost all of the public network destroyed by the bad weather, but it needs an increase in capacity to withstand future extreme events for longer.
In the city of Beira, the most devastated by the cyclone Idai, 49 MegaWatts (MW) of the 54 MW of normal power capacity destined for the locality were restored, which allows almost all the consumers to have access to electricity supply of the public network.
EDM was also able to resume the supply of electricity to almost all consumers in the province of Cabo Delgado, the hardest hit in the north of the country.
Cyclone Idai hit central Mozambique in March, caused 603 deaths and affected about 1.5 million people, with Beira, one of the country’s main cities, severely affected.
Cyclone Kenneth, which struck the north of the country in April, killed 45 people and affected 250,000 people.
