Cahora Bassa seeks energy alternatives
The board director of Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric Plant (HCB), César Machava, told Lusa on Tuesday that the Mozambican company intends to identify alternatives to the dam that fuels the project, given the need for sustainability.
César Machava said that the use of other energy sources could involve the use of more renewable energies, but did not specify the type of alternatives under analysis.
“A study is still going on at a very embryonic stage, within the scope of strategic thinking that HCB has always followed,” said the official.
Machava added that the search for alternative sources of energy is part of the effort to adopt resilience measures against the excessive use of water from the Zambezi River.
“The risk to the dam is minimal at the moment, but we have to prepare for the future,” said César Machava.
The HCB dam is one of the largest in the world and supplies electricity to Mozambique and several countries in southern Africa.
